"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning."
NKJV, Psalm 30:5
"He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him."
NKJV, Psalm 126:6
How are your eyes? Are they dry, unaffected by the burdens of a lost and dying world? Or are they dripping with tears, touched by the pain and brokenness you see around you? The state of our eyes often reflects the state of our hearts—whether we are moved by the things that move the heart of God.
The story of William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, illustrates this truth well. Booth’s passion for souls led him to send workers into the darkest, most hopeless places to proclaim the gospel. On one occasion, two workers sent to a particularly difficult area reported back to Booth, saying that their efforts had yielded little to no fruit. Disheartened, they asked for guidance. Booth replied with a simple but profound telegram: Try tears.
Taking his words to heart, the workers began crying out to God in prayer, their tears flowing as they interceded for the souls of the people they were called to reach. The result was a remarkable harvest of lives transformed by the gospel.
The psalmist reminds us that sowing often comes with weeping. To bear seed for sowing—whether through prayer, preaching, or acts of love—requires a heart burdened for the lost. When we truly see God’s holiness and our own unworthiness, as Paul did when he cried, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Rom. 7:24), our hearts cannot help but break for those who do not yet know Him.
A soul that sees God as He is will be moved to tears—not only tears of repentance for personal sin but also tears of compassion for others. Those tears become prayers, and those prayers become seeds that bear eternal fruit.
The promise of Psalm 126 is sure: those who go forth weeping, bearing precious seed, will return with joy, bringing their sheaves with them. Let’s not be afraid of the tears that come from a heart touched by God. Bow before Him in weeping, for in those tears lies the power to transform lives—both ours and those we are called to reach.
