In 2018, we were contacted by an Anabaptist team working in the Middle East about possible need for Bible translation among the people group they serve. This led to an intense research and survey project, including two families spending a summer in the area getting acquainted with the social, linguistic, and spiritual landscape. The conclusion was that, yes, Bible translation would be a definite asset to the development of the church in that region.
This displaced people group face many disadvantages and uncertainties about their future. Community development research is underway, to supplement the translation work, both of which will support the work of making disciples and seeing maturing churches established among the Reya Nurani.
Amish-Mennonite churches from Pennsylvania and Indiana sent two families, trained as Bible translators, to the area in 2022. They appreciate prayer support in the years of learning language and culture. Meanwhile, some translation has already begun with local believers.
“Reya Nurani” is a code name for this people group and is pronounced RAY-ah nu-RAH-nee.
