In an area of one of Indonesia’s largest islands live the people we call the “Sungai.” Some live in the cities and mingle regularly with speakers of other languages, while some are more rural. There is no Scripture, and few known believers, among the Sungai.
Two families from two churches in Kansas have prepared to respond to this need. By early 2019, both families were deep in formal Indonesian language study in another part of the country. They now live among the Sungai people and are hard at work learning the Sungai language and culture and building relationships. In 2022, a new business plan was implemented involving an agricultural effort.
Pray for the team as they continue learning the language and culture and prepare to work, to some degree, with local churches in the great task of translating the Scriptures.
“Sungai” is a code name for this people group and is pronounced soong-EYE.
